Once you've got a couple areas or properties in mind, compare prices. Will you need to bring a camp stove, kitchen utensils, bed linens? Is there a barbecue grill available? Will you have access to lakes or rivers for fishing, swimming, boating? Are there supermarkets or grocers nearby? What about other entertainment, restaurants?

Even better, consider visiting the park or area and check out the property beforehand.įind out what housekeeping facilities are available. Door County in Wisconsin, for example, has a vacation guidebook loaded with cottage rental listings.Ĭheck with friends and relatives who have have rented properties in the area. If you can pinpoint a town you'd like to visit, contact the chamber of commerce there and request information on renting cabins or cottages. If you want to track down lodging in a state park, such matters are often handled by the state's department of natural resources.

Many have brochures with extensive listings of rental properties. Contact the state tourism office (for a list, see ) or the particular region's convention and visitors bureau. Do you want something a bit modern with, say, indoor plumbing and electricity, a VCR and a fireplace, or something truly rustic? Do you want to be on a lake for fishing and swimming or do you want to hike off into the woods to your lodging? Do you want to be near a golf course or restaurants? Which means deciding what you want in a cabin or cottage. "You have to ask questions to get what you want," says Robert Green, president of the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association. So how should one go about tracking down a summer cabin or cottage successfully? His group represents about 1,050 lodging properties, from hotels to bed-and-breakfasts, with 10 percent to 15 percent of those classified as cabins or cottages. They would have housekeeping facilities and utensils. The Wisconsin Innkeepers Association, according to president Robert Green, says, "A cottage or cabin is an individual living unit as opposed to a condo, which has several units in one building or a bed-and-breakfast, which is considered a home. There are a wide range of privately-owned cabins and cottages, at varied prices, located throughout the Midwest, particularly in wooded and lake regions. The lack of state park cabins, though, shouldn't put a crimp in summer vacation plans. (Or consider visiting during a season less busy than summer, since many are available year-round.) Their advice: Call to check availability if nothing is available, ask if you can have your name put on a waiting list in case of cancellations. Officials do say, however, that some space is available at certain facilities. You can't just drive up and expect to find space as you might at a local motel, say park officials. Since the units are extremely popular, they sometimes are reserved a year or two in advance. Of course, cabins located in state parks are only one way to enjoy the woods and lakefronts of the Midwest-and a limited one at that.

Wisconsin has only three cabins in state parks for rental: the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Seth Peterson cottage in Mirror Lake a second cabin in that park and a third in southern Kettle Moraine, which are rented only to the disabled.
